BIRMINGHAM, AL – February 9, 2010 – The Museum of Urban Art (MUA) is pleased to announce a unique competition for Birmingham students to design artwork celebrating the history of Haiti, and bringing awareness to the specific needs of the country with regards to the recent earthquake disaster.
The top twenty (20) artist’s entries, whose work best captures the theme of the competition, will enjoy a special reception at the 4th Annual Art Show and Awards Gala. A silent auction will be held featuring the top submitted works, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the relief effort in Haiti (*). The top 3 entries will be awarded gallery space associated with MUA for 3 months, with an opening reception (date TBA).
“The purpose of this year’s theme is to draw attention to the history and legacy of Haiti, and to evoke a sense of community and selflessness by promoting aid for Haiti during their time of need,” said Patrick Johnson, President of MUA’s Board of Directors. This competition will provide our young artists with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their work produced on a professional scale and will be viewed by future generations.
The contest is open to all current high school and college students in the Birmingham area. Applications are available on the MUA website, www.themuseumofurbanart.org/artcontest.pdf. Artwork may be produced on paper, canvas or other medium, including graphic design. If computer generated the artwork must be able to be printed in order to be considered. All applications and artwork must be received at the office of the City of Birmingham, Department of Youth Services, 808 North 18th Street, no later than 4:30pm on Monday, April 12, 2010.
