BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham mayor William Bell will address the state of technology in the city at the Alabama Social Media Association’s first ever Tech Tweetup. The Sept. 21 event, which is free and open to the public, will also feature networking and a light dinner.

“We’re proud to partner with the City of Birmingham in its mission to provide social media education to all,” says Stephanie Hutcheson, ALsocme executive director. “We are excited to hear Mayor Bell speak on how digital technology can serve as an economic catalyst for our city.”

The Tech Tweetup will be held Sept. 21 at Old Car Heaven, 115 35th St. S., Avondale. Networking will take place from 5 to 6 p.m., with the mayor’s address from 6 to 6:30, followed by more networking until 8 p.m. (The event was postponed from July because Mayor Bell was called away to Washington to discuss tornado aid.)

It is sponsored by Wesban Financial Consultants (www.wesban.com), a fee-only investment advisory and financial planning firm in Birmingham. A light dinner will be provided by catering sponsor Ted’s Restaurant (tedsbirmingham.com), a family-owned Greek meat-and-three restaurant and caterer on Southside. Cash bar will be available.

The Tweetup will also feature representatives from ALsocme’s 17 partner organizations.

Tickets are free, but attendees must register by visiting alsocme.com.

The Alabama Social Media Association (ALsocme) is an independent, grassroots nonprofit group, open to anyone who wishes to share ideas or advance their knowledge of social media and how it is used by businesses, organizations, and consumers. Its mission is education: empowering people with social media tools and knowledge to help them meet professional and personal goals.

If you have not had a chance to check out Birmingham’s Annual Sidewalk Film Festival make sure you plan to attend this weekend.  The festival kicks off on Friday, August 26 and goes through Sunday, August 28 and always features a pretty extensive list of parties, workshops, events, interesting people and movies.

The 13th annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, a celebration of new independent cinema in downtown Birmingham.  Since its debut in 1999, filmmakers from across the country and around the world have come to Birmingham to screen their work at Sidewalk and have been thrilled to discover fresh, enthusiastic crowds eager to devour new independent cinema.

Movies and events will be held through nine venues located within Birmingham’s historic Theatre District (featuring the newly restored Alabama Theatre, a 2,200 seat movie palace built by Paramount in 1927), spontaneity rules the schedule of Sidewalk attendees. Low-priced weekend passes provide easy access to Sidewalk venues, encouraging attendees to seek out new films and sample programming they may not otherwise see. The result is a crowd rich in diversity and united in a hunger for new film.
